I use Symantec which is the enterprise version of Norton so Norton would have the same definitions. As per Liam, my machines still function efficiently.
If you google the top AntiVirus as the big vendors by number of users will usually have the most resources to fund their teams/labs. Kaspersky seems to have a good reputation.
Just so you know if you go for a free one there is usually a tradeoff, like uses more load or free for only a month.
So if it slows down your machine it's defeating the purpose as that's what viruses do so it's no different.
Also, to properly uninstall an AV from your machine you need to run their specific cleanwipe tool (not just uninstall it using 'Programs and Features') so if you keep installing/uninstalling freebies or trials you'll still have some of their remnants unless you use their cleanwipes, which usually aren't available to download but rather you have to email their support.
Also if using AV on a Windows machine then you should turn off windows firewall and windows defender and use the paid AV version of these instead, usually the AV will turn off the Windows firewall for you during install. You shouldn't have both AV and Windows firewalls on together, they will conflict and possibly slow your network connection and maybe even slow the general performance of the machine.
If you signup on their site or newsletter they might send you a discount on the price if you wait a day or two. Also don't autorenew, as the last few days of your subscription they will keep discounting further to get you to stay so wait till the last day before renew or even let it expire slightly you might get it for less than 50%. Usually you get about 3 licenses with each purchase so you can install it on three separate machines.
Don't bother reading reviews by bloggers that link to the softwares, they are usually just affiliate sellers so will have a vested interest. Reviews by big tech websites might be more impartial. Else you could check the google news tab when searching their company to see how often they get bad press.
You'll never be 100% protected but if you go with one of the big players you should be ok almost always.
