The commentators have been performing mental gymnastics to try to make out it's the wrong decision. It was a clearly correct one.

We were playing second fiddle all night. Starting with one holding midfielder instead of the usual two didn't work. Motta must've had his reasons, live and learn.

The team just wasn't sharp enough tonight, Stuttgart looked better organised and more compact. There was too many gaps in the midfield when defending and everyone wanted too many touches with the ball. Motta's still trying to find his best combinations, not helped by some injuries, but I think he needs to decide soon who he thinks is best which will help in games like this.

I feared we might be in for a bit of a hiding when they went 1-0 up but we've played reasonably well. We're clearly still raw in our development and Danilo is lacking match sharpness, and some of our passing isn't great but i think we can get something out of this game yet. Was their player not coming from an offside position when Kalulu fouled for their second penalty?

I think there's good signs going forward, but the defence is missing Bremer. It didn't look like there was any contact for their 1st penalty though from any of the angles I saw.

I didn't like the ref either, he gave a lot of soft fouls their way.

That was a crazy game, and it's clear that this team has a lot of potential in attack, which will only get better once the injured players are back. Defensively though I am concerned without Bremer. I think Gatti should start in place of Danilo as Danilo has made some mistakes as even though I think the first penalty tonight is debatable he's still swung at it and not got the ball like in midweek.

Conceicao looks really good and produced a great assist for Weah's goal. Yildiz needed those 2 goals to boost his confidence and it was a good first goal with great movement from McKennie to setup it up.

And this team showed that they'll fight.
