I’ve written a new article about the white elephants of Italia ‘90

Italy spent €4bn throwing the party of the summer in 1990 - but behind the facade of magnificent World Cup tournament lay stories of miscalculation & farcical mismanagement

Part of hosting a World Cup seems to be wasting lots of public funds, even in a country like Italy which mostly had the stadiums. I tend to think that a lot of the time Fifa is to blame.

I’d have to dig the numbers out, but from memory 1990 was quite a bit more expensive than those the followed.

I didn’t cover it here as it was pretty difficult to research, but there seemed to be examples in Italy of WC funding being used to build ring roads in cities that didn’t host any games!

Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed reading that, even though so much money was squandered and the Country's football fans and clubs are still paying the price for the mismanagement over 30 years later.....

Had the opportunity to visit the Stadio San Nicola in Bari a few years ago and its hugely impressive, even though its wholly unsuited for modern football watching!
