The draw is tomorrow, so I thought I may as well get the thread started.

Pot 1: Qatar, Brazil, Belgium, France, Argentina, England, Spain, Portugal.

Pot 2: Mexico, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Uruguay, Switzerland, USA, Croatia.

Pot 3: Senegal, Iran, Japan, Morocco, Serbia, Poland, South Korea, Tunisia.

Pot 4: Cameroon, Canada, Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, Ghana, Wales/Scotland/Ukraine, Costa Rica/New Zealand, UAE/Australia/Peru.

Seeing Qatar in pot 1 I was going to suggest that Qatar were the worst host nation ever in terms of footballing level... but actually looking at their past results they aren't quite as bad as I expected.

I've not been feeling that enthusiastic for this World Cup, but seeing the draw and know it's the last with 32 teams I'm feeling a bit more enthusiasm for it. The whole idea of a winter tournament in Qatar is still a very bad one though.

When I saw the list of the countries that qualified I had a funny feeling we would get Iran. Spooky.
In 2010 we supposedly had an easy group and we barely made it out so the crowing is a bit odd & premature. Having said that I think we do have more quality in this squad. Fingers crossed.

I forgot the next WC is in North America.

So something thats just came to me - Mexico has hosted the WC three times since England did in 1966. That's quite incredible. But I've also just realised the two of the most iconic goals - Brazil's in 1970 and Maradona's in 1986 were in the same stadium. :eeksurprised:

I think 1986 was meant to be in Chile but they broke out in civil war and it was then given to Mexico . But still.

I think it was originally meant to be in Colombia in 86.

The 1994 tournament is the first I can remember and I loved it, especially Baggio and Maradona until he got kicked out. An American World Cup makes me nostalgic for that tournament.

You're right it was Colombia, turned out they couldn't afford to hold it, not that they broke out in war. There was mass unrest in Chile at around the same time due to Pinochet, I always had it in my head, that Chile was meant to hold it. Maybe Colombia should have asked Pablo Escobar for the money, lol. I kid.

Yeah, I have some great memories from there too, some not so good, Baggio 😔. More from 1998 tho, that's when I was really into football.

WC 94! I was telling everyone Italy was going to win and Baggio was the best. People actually were a bit interested in it since it was here in the US. Chicago hosted the opening game near me, and I think I told the story about how my girlfriend at the time met the German team and was hit on by Lothar Mattheus. lol I was so proud......

The first World Cup I was aware of was Mexico '86 but the first one I properly watched was Italia '90.
I had the Panini sticker book. 😎

There's never been a WC I haven't enjoyed, but the first WC I have proper formed memories of was '82.

So many iconic moments in that tournament and as a Dundee United and Scotland fan, watching Dave Narey score a screamer against Brazil was up there in terms of WC highs, Socrates, Eder, Zico et al waking up for the rest of the 90mins would be one of the lows of course..... :whistler:

'86 was great as well, especially the France vs Brazil QF. Platini, Tigana and Giresse vs Socrates, Junior and Careca etc (Zico was injured and only started on the bench?). Watched it in the youth club with my mates, half of us supporting France, half supporting Brazil. Incredible end to end game. I really need to take time to re-watch the full 90mins.

I remember my father was picking my sister and I take us out to dinner and I was watching the Brazil vs France game in 86 and I made him wait until it was over until we could leave. And he loathes soccer with a passion. haha

It was well worth it though. Classic WC game I was pretty neutral at the time since Italy were out

Is anyone feeling this yet? I can't seem to care about it. Maybe because its in Qatar, their human rights issues, Anti-LGBT stance, fact that's in winter, mighty Scotland didn't qualify lol. I feel no hype for it, very weird.

Yeah definitely not feeling it. It feels awkward like i'm not sure if i should not watch it due to human rights issues because i don't know what reports are real and what is hearsay.

Tbh, at the best of times i feel like boycotting anything to do with FIFA anyway as it is.
