I have not explored his discography, but its weird that you just mentioned him because I was reading this article recently about who really started 'gangsta' rap and his name got mentioned a lot, and I made a mental note to check him out, so will do soon. Also, Kool Moe Dee.

Apparently ol' Kool had major beef with LL Cool J. I can't imagine LL getting into it with someone, but I'm not a huge fan of his so I don't know his whole story. Maybe I should put LL on the list too.
